i can't help but thinking that it's strange that ontario, canada has a paris. it's near toronto, and not very big, and not particularly parisian. but there it is {there's also one in texas, for you american folk}.
my friend's family is from waterloo, ontario...which used to be known as new berlin before the war. it hosts the largest oktoberfest outside of canada, which is something to brag about {if you're me.}
new york used to be new amsterdam. and at one point, america considered german as its official language. wie interessante waere die welt denn? {what an interesting world it would be}.
just something to consider in light of globalization, history, nomenclature.

21| persephone
the greek god of fertility.
"as she was gathering flowers with her playmates in a meadow, the earth opened and Pluto, god of the dead, appeared and carried her off to be his queen in the world below... torch in hand, her sorrowing mother sought her through the wide world, and finding her not she forbade the earth to put forth its increase. so all that year not a blade of corn grew on the earth, and men would have died of hunger if Zeus had not persuaded Pluto to let Persephone go. But before he let her go Pluto made her eat the seed of a pomegranate, and thus she could not stay away from him for ever. so it was arranged that she should spend two-thirds of every year with her mother and the heavenly gods, and should pass the rest of the year with Pluto beneath the earth. ... as wife of Pluto, she sent spectres, ruled the ghosts, and carried into effect the curses of men."
i came across the name yesterday, overhearing a conversation between two women at the coffee shop. in addition to being a really interesting myth, it's also a planet in firefly {geekdom} and a musical work by stravinsky. furthermore, one of the women said that the girl went by the nickname percy. who could go wrong with that name?

1| an overabundance.

this morning, i set out to start my umpteenth blog (because i get tired of names really quickly, and to be quite honest, kaitlinwainwright.blogspot.com is not all that inspiring).
unbeknownst to me, there is an overabundance of underused blogs in the internets. carboniferous (my etsy shop and twitter) and herinfinitevariety (my tumblr) were both taken on wordpress and on blogger.
i would have simply registered my name, if my name were registerably simple: there are as many ways to spell kaitlin as i have fingers and toes, and wainwright...well, let's just say that my father used to get mail addressed to Mr. Wayne Wright (insert obligatory chuckle).
which is not to say that i'm not thankful for my name, but simply that i'm a little miffed that carboniferous.blogspot.com and herinfinitevariety.blogspot.com have not been updated since their first post. (then again, i'm the pot calling the kettle here, having abandoned my previous blog for its hacking capabilities).
